Orinda History

The 12.8 square miles that became the city of Orinda were, in the earlier days, a part of Mexico City. The region flourished when the Caldecott Tunnel opened in the year 1937. Orinda was incorporated as a city in the year 1985, after more than 100 years of steady development. Orinda is named after a woman. It started as a family oriented community in an idyllic setting and today, it remains the same. It is one of the most beautiful cities in Contra Costa County.
